Appropriate smoke-control systems maintain smoke-free paths of egress for building occupants through a series of fans, ductwork, and firesmoke dampers. Stair pressurization systems maintain a clear path of egress for occupants to safe areas or to evacuate the building. Smokecontrol fans should be located higher in a building rather than at lower floors to limit exposure/access to external vents. Vestibules at stairways with separate pressurization provide an additional layer of smoke control.
