Metal, organic, conversion, and enamel coatings are used to protect unalloyed and low-alloyed cast irons. High-alloyed irons are rarely coated. Metal coatings may be anodic to iron, providing a sacrificial protection, while other metals may be barrier type coatings. The remaining coating material types are all barrier coatings.
